HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to avoid injuries to dustmen by wrapping sharp objects before putting them in refuse sacks.
The plea has been made by district councillors in the New Forest, where wheelie bins have yet to replace large plastic bags.
Cllr Geoffrey Blunden is the authority's portfolio holder for environment and sustainability.
He said: "Our refuse collection teams have encountered instances where sharp objects such as knives and broken glass have been placed in refuse sacks.
"These occurrences pose significant risks to our staff members during the collection process. We are calling on our residents to ensure the safe disposal of sharp objects and help us maintain a secure working environment for our team."
Council chiefs say potentially harmful items should be securely wrapped or packaged before being put in plastic sacks.
Cllr Blunden said: "We appreciate the conscientious efforts of residents who prioritise responsible waste disposal and help us create a safer environment for all."
