Can you see this speed limit sign on a Southampton road?

Probably not as it has been obscured by a telegraph pole.

Eagle-eyed residents in Freemantle eventually spotted the partially-concealed 20mph sign.

The sign can be seen from the opposite direction and when you move to the other side of the road.

But on approach, only a small part of the sign is visible.

Daily Echo:

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the location of the sign on Lansdowne Road as "a joke".

She said: “Where the council has put the sign is a joke.

“How can you see that? I walk and drive, and you cannot see the sign until you’re close to it.

“I also think it’s silly that the speed limit has gone to 20mph now as my road is used as a cut through.

“People fly down the roads. What are they going to do, have police on the roads to see if you’re doing 20mph?”

The sign was installed in the summer as part of the overall rollout of 20mph speed limits in Shirley, Freemantle, and Regents Park.

The reduced limit is already in place in Bassett, Polygon and St Denys and is set to be expanded further across the city in a bid to reduce the number of road accidents.

Cllr Eamonn Keogh, cabinet member for environment and transport, acknowledged the location of the sign is "not ideal" and said it might be moved.

In a statement, he said: “Now the installation is complete, we will undertake an area-wide review of the signage in the coming weeks and move signs where required, taking into consideration adjacent signage distances to ensure guidance is adhered to.

“We accept that this particular sign is obscured when viewed from the footway, as the photo shows.

“From the road, the sign is visible approaching from Regents Park Road, nevertheless the close proximity to the telephone mast is not ideal and we will consider moving the sign as part of the area-wide review.”
