A New Forest venue has cancelled an upcoming event after finding out Katie Hopkins was the main speaker.

Lyndhurst Community Centre said the controversial media personality’s ‘SpeakEasy’ event "was not an event which we wished to host".

Controversial Ms Hopkins had been booked by the New Forest Freedom Community for October 26.

However, a spokesperson for the community centre said the venue only found out who the speaker for the event was going to be earlier this week.

A statement on Ms Hopkins' website said: “These intimate ‘Speakeasy’ gatherings are the perfect place to think, speak and laugh freely.”

A spokesperson for Lyndhurst Community Centre told the Echo: “I can confirm that this particular booking from New Forest Community will not be taking place at Lyndhurst Community Centre.

“When we first received the enquiry from New Forest (Freedom) Community a month ago for a speaker evening we were unaware of who their speaker would be.  

“When we became aware of the identity of the speaker at the start of this week we reviewed the situation [and] we took the view that this was not an event which we wished to host.

“We had a conversation with the person making the booking and advised them that we would not be going ahead with accepting the booking.

“There is therefore no booking for this speaker, and the person who contacted us from New Forest (Freedom) Community has been aware of this for some days.

“This news appears not to have filtered through to Ms Hopkins and therefore the announcement on her website is incorrect.”

Ms Hopkins was billed as a guest speaker of the New Forest Freedom Community but was not named in their publicity material on Eventbrite.

This is the second time the former newspaper columnist has had an event cancelled in the Southampton area. 

In February, The Attic Southampton had booked the political commentator to bring her 'Live Laugh Love' comedy tour to Totton.

However, soon after the announcement, bands and acts due to perform at the venue in Winsor Road pulled their shows as a sign of protest – forcing the venue to cancel.

Ms Hopkins, a former contestant on The Apprentice and Celebrity Big Brother, was sacked by LBC in 2017 for a controversial tweet in response to the Manchester Arena bombing.
