A man has been saved from drowning near Town Quay.

He was spotted face down and unresponsive in the water by people nearby - prompting the emergency services to be called.

Meanwhile, a heroic bystander jumped into the water and turned him face up before pulling him onto a nearby boat.

By this time, Solent Rescue had arrived and the man was passed into their care.

They took him to Town Quay Marina, where paramedics were waiting to resuscitate him and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The Coastguard were alerted to the incident on Saturday at 2.40pm, and prepared a lifeboat and its helicopter to attend.

But as the man had already been rescued at this stage, they were not needed.

They were stood down by 5pm.

How the man came to be face down in the water is currently unknown, the Coastguard said.
