A Southampton garage has thanked its loyal customers as it celebrates 75 years in business.

E&J Jarvis is well known for its iconic yellow mini on the front wall of the garage in Onslow Road that has been up since 1982.

The family business has now been open for 75 years, starting in 1947 and has spanned three generations.

The business first started in a tin shed in Priory Road, St Denys, by mechanic Eddie Jarvis, who created a strong and personal bond with his customers.

Eddie then took on his son John, to become E&J Jarvis.

Current owner and Eddie's Grandson, Ian Jarvis, said he has maintained his grandfather's ethos which has allowed his family to stay in business for so long.

Ian, 53, said: “I want to say a huge thankyou to our long-standing customers and dedicated members of staff that have allowed us to stay trading for the last 75 years.

“My grandfather started this garage just after the second world war, and it makes me incredibly proud to have such a well know and reputable brand in Southampton.”

Ian has been a guest speaker on Radio Solent and holds free skills classes in Southampton for various age groups, teaching key skills such as how to change a car wheel or check oil levels.

E&J Jarvis’ social media strategist and sales advisor, Dave Tappenden, said: “We offer Southampton a dealership level service, without charging the dealership prices. We are always open and honest with our customers and people value that.

“We have found that people value that honesty. That is why many of our customers have been coming to us for more than 30, 40, even 50 years. They know and trust us and that is why we have been here 75 years.”

Like many family-run businesses, E&J Javis faced a number of challenges during the pandemic but managed to bounce back.

Dave added: “Covid was tough on us with servicing and MOT counts dropping massively.

“However, it also helped us change and modernise as a business by utilising our social media and online channels and restructuring how we source and sell vehicles.”
