A public memorial for a Bengal cat who became a social media sensation and honorary police officer is on the cards after smashing its fundraising target.

Tilly became well-known in Gosport for being spotted in unusual places - including the High Street and police station, where she became their office mascot. She was even given a 'police cat' name badge.

A Facebook page called ‘Tilly’s Gosport Adventures’ allowed the public to see her exploits.

However, on Friday morning, it was announced the beloved pet had sadly died aged two. It is believed she was hit by a car.

A shrine was set up to the famous feline, with people laying flowers - and an online fundraiser for a permanent memorial has already raised £2,700, smashing its target of £2,000.

The current plan is to use the money to put up a plaque or a statue of the popular puss.

Reacting to the outpouring of support, her owner Caroline Oakes said on Tilly's Facebook account: "Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your love and support for my Tilly."

This comes after she posted about Tilly's death. She said: “It is with great sadness that I tell you that Tilly was found sleeping peacefully this morning. I don’t know why. I am going to the vet now to say goodbye as a kind lady handed her in.

“I am beyond devastated. Sleep tight my precious Tilly.”

Daily Echo:

The same day, in a post shared on Gosport Police, officers expressed their sadness at hearing of the beloved pet’s death.

It said: “We at the Gosport office are very sad to hear of the sudden passing of Tilly, who was a fond favourite around Gosport High Street and in our station.

“From helping A/PS Hopkins with crime reports, assisting with an open-air search in the High Street, to cheering us up with her friendly attention, she will be much missed by us and many others in Gosport.
