THESE firefighters will be doing what they do best this Sunday - saving lives. But they will not be fighting any fires. Instead they are running 5km to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
The brave women from Eastleigh Fire Station are among the 10,000 ladies taking part in Race for Life and they intend to complete the course wearing full firefighting gear.
They are hoping two good things will come out of the race: raising money to help beat cancer and encouraging women to consider a career in the fire service.
Denise Knight - one of 56 female firefighters in Hampshire - said: "We were talking about ways of getting involved and raising money for charity when it was suggested that we form a female team and take part in Race for Life in our fire kits. The idea immediately caught on.
"Hopefully it will be a chilly day, or we will be feeling the heat having chosen to run in our fire kits.
"Not only will this be a chance to raise money for Cancer Research but also to promote firefighting as a career."
Entry to Race for Life Southampton has been extended. Register by 11.59pm Thursday at raceforlife.org/southwest or call 0871 641 2279.
