The mum of a 12-year-old girl attacked outside a Southampton school says it is 'disgusting' police will not investigate the assault.
The Year 8 pupil, who the Daily Echo is not naming, was rushed to A&E with a concussion after being targeted by two girls aged 14 and 15 outside Oasis Academy Mayfield.
Hampshire police has identified the girls in question but said it will not take any action against them.
It has instead asked the school to investigate.
The police's response has angered the girl's mum who accused the police of "taking the easy way out".
Oasis Academy Mayfield says "safeguarding is our highest priority".
'Crying out for help'
The girl's mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were picking up the girl from school at around 1pm on Wednesday.
Her mother said: "My daughter called me, screaming at me, saying ‘Mum I have been hurt’.
"She wasn’t saying much that made sense, she was just crying out for help and I just wanted to save my little girl."
When they arrived at the school on Ashley Crescent, staff were with the girl.
The mum said: “My mum and nan went to deal with my daughter and made sure she was okay while I ran after the girls, but they were both gone at that point.
“My daughter was pale at the time.”
The 12-year-old was rushed to Southampton General Hospital.
She suffered a concussion, three bruised ribs, lumps to her head and had high blood pressure.
She was monitored by doctors and given painkillers.
'No wonder kids are carrying around knives'
Her mum is demanding action from police to make sure the attackers face justice.
She said: “Something needs to be done about this, this is the police taking the easy way out and not doing anything.
“I feel like these girls are being left unpunished. It is disgusting, no wonder kids are carrying around knives and stabbing people because they feel like they can do whatever they want and the police won’t do anything about it.”
She added: "This has knocked her confidence completely. She is a quiet but happy, bubbly girl."
The police response
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said enquiries remain ongoing but at this stage, no further action is being taken against the girls identified in connection with the attack.
The school has been asked to investigate the incident with a view to finding a 'suitable resolution', a force spokesperson said.
If the action taken by the school is not deemed to be appropriate, or further concerns are raised by the victim or her guardian, police can issue a Community Resolution Order.
This type of response is used to deal with certain crimes by first-time offenders without taking the matter to court.
'Safeguarding is our highest priority'
A spokesperson from Oasis Academy Mayfield said: "We have been made aware of and are investigating an incident, which has also been reported to the police.
"As a Trust, safeguarding is our highest priority, and we take all incidents of this nature very seriously. Given the police involvement, it is not appropriate to comment further."
