A five-year-old from Southampton and her mum have been left ‘shocked’ after finding a bizarre addition to her packet of cheese and onion crisps.

Alice Upson bought a multipack of Snackrite – ridged, thick cut cheese and onion crisps – from Aldi on Bursledon Road last weekend for her daughter Mia.

When the five-year-old opened a packet on Sunday afternoon, the infant school pupil was left ‘confused’ after finding a halved potato in her crisp packet – with only a few crumbs at the bottom of the packaging.

Speaking to the Echo, Alice said: “Ironically at first, she wasn’t actually sure if she wanted anything.

“Then when she opened the packet, she was confused because she could see that something else was in there.

“She called me over to have a look and we were shocked because at first we didn’t know what it was.”

Daily Echo:

The mum's initiation reaction was that the lump might have been something far more disgusting.

Alice added: “At first, we thought it might have been a dead rat!

“It just caught us by surprise; you don’t expect this sort of thing to happen so were wondering what on earth it was.

“Then, when we realised it was a whole potato, we couldn’t believe it.

"You question how it got there; we found it more amusing than anything else.

Daily Echo:

“My daughter is quite young, and I don’t think she fully understands that crisps come from potatoes, but even so the whole thing is bizarre.

“We didn’t know whether to open the other packets and see if they were the same, fortunately this was the only one!”

A spokesperson for Aldi told the Echo: “We apologise that this product did not meet our usual high standards.

“Aldi customers can return any item they are not happy with for a full refund.”

As for Mia, when asked if she’ll be eating crisps any time soon, mum Alice said: “I think she might be avoiding them, at least in the short-term.”
