A woman has been sectioned after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident by Cobden Bridge on Thursday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Hampshire police confirmed the 31-year-old woman “has now been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act”.

It comes after police were called out just after 3.30pm yesterday following reports that an adult had gone into the River Itchen with two youngsters near Cobden Bridge.

All three people were pulled from the water and treated by paramedics shortly after.

Following the incident, police said a 31-year-old woman from Southampton had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The investigation is still ongoing.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: "This was an isolated incident and there are no wider threats to the community."

They declined to disclose any further information.
