The New Look store in Shirley is due to close in December – the latest high street shop to disappear from Southampton.
The popular Southampton store on Shirley High Street sells a range of men and women’s clothing and is known for being an affordable British fashion retailer.
A New Look spokesperson said: “Our store in Shirley is closing on the 3rd of December.
“We would like to thank all of our colleagues and the local community for their support over the years.
“We hope customers continue to shop with us at our nearby location in Southampton, while our full product ranges can also be found at newlook.com.”
The retail chain was founded in 1969 and operates more than 400 stores across the UK.
Shirley resident, Tony Weafer, 69, said: “We have just lost Wilko all over the country and we recently lost pound land in Shirley.
“This is massively affecting the high street here and in so many other places. If this is happening in Shirley then what about the shops on Southampton High Street – how will they cope?
“Only this year we have seen a lot of independent businesses open in Shirley and other places in the city, but how long can they survive I just don’t know.
“Not only is this a sad thing for the residents of Shirley as they have one less shop to visit but it is also terrible for the staff that have lost their jobs.”
“Businesses are being driven away in Southampton and falling victim to the internet and online based shopping.”
A number of high street retailers have left shop spaces vacant. Wilko in Southampton was recently closed after the company failed to secure a buyer.
There is also a New Look store on Southampton High Street that is open as usual.
The store in Shirley will be open to customers until December 3.
