The launch of a police unit focused on shoplifting has yielded success after it caught a 'prolific' shoplifter.
In an effort to reduce retail crimes in the city, and faced with an increase in violence towards shop staff, Southampton police have introduced a City Centre Unit.
This was set to comprise of seven officers, a sergeant and a group of PCSOs.
On Saturday, police officers from the unit went out on patrol and spoke with local businesses and members of public.

A member of the team said: “So far we have arrested a prolific offender for three shoplifting offences.
“The man in question remains in police custody at this time."
A number of other people were also been dealt with for causing anti-social behaviour.
They continued: “Crime and anti-social in the city centre or other parts of Southampton will not be tolerated.
“We will continue a robust approach for those who commit offences in the city.”
The City Centre Unit's goal is to provide support to the business community in the city and make it a safe place for visitors.
