A two-year-long petition for Southampton City Council to build a ‘Trader Joe’s’ has ended with no signatures.
Due to a blunder, the campaign for the well-known American grocery store in Southampton was launched on the city council's website in 2021 - rather than in a township in Pennsylvania, USA with the same name.
The petition claimed the nearest Trader Joe's was 20 minutes away - when in fact, it is thousands of miles across the Atlantic.

The mission floundered when the petition ended on October 27 after failing to garner a single signature – not even one from the petitioner themselves.
It read: “We the undersigned petition the council to make a Trader Joe’s on Street Rd and Davisville Rd where the old Acme was.
“I believe this is beneficial to the community as there is no Trader Joe’s within a five-mile radius. The closest one is 20 mins away.”
Ironically, the nearest Trader Joe's to us in Southampton is in New Hampshire, USA.
Regardless of the mistake, the council would have no authority to insist on a private company setting up shop in the area.
As of November 2023, there is still no Trader Joe’s on Street Road and Dashville Road.
With its headquarters in California, the grocery chain has 569 stores across the United States.
