A new attendance record has been set for the Southampton 10k run as more than 1,000 people took to the city's streets.

Runners of all ages braved the cold this morning as they set off from St Mary's Stadium for the annual event which spans from Ocean Village to Northam Bridge.

It is the first time more than 1,000 people have taken part in the race after it took place for the first time last December.

The 10k finished back at the home of Southampton FC where runners were awarded their medals by Mayor, Valerie Laurent.

Organiser and senior operations manager at Run Through Southampton, Ross Franks, said the run had been the biggest yet.

He said: “We’ve had more entries than last year, which has exceeded 1,000 runners on the day, it’s been brilliant.

Daily Echo:

“It’s a popular event and we’ve had to close the surrounding roads as there’s been so many people taking part.

“It takes around a year to plan the event and to see so many families and groups of friends join in the fun has really made our day and made it all worthwhile.”

The event began at 9am and was followed by a children’s race which was taking place for the first time as aspiring runners completed a lap of the stadium.

Dan Majors, 21, and Ollie Payne, 22, both travelled from Bournemouth to take part.

Ollie said: “It was cold, but I really enjoyed it!

Daily Echo:

“We’ve never run in Southampton before, before this we’d only completed the Bournemouth Half Marathon, so we decided to come along and see how we found it today.

“It was easier than I thought it was going to be, to be honest!

“Thankfully it was quite flat which helped, it’s also nice to pick up a medal at the end which can be added to the collection.”

Daily Echo:

Carl Isaac Iszat was joined by his friend John Mark as they cheered on their wives – Emily and Nat.

Carl told the Echo: “It’s been really fun and inspiring for future generations.”
