A Southampton pub has announced that it is closing its doors at the end of this year after new plans were submitted for the site.

The Firehouse on Vincent's Walk is set to close after a final farewell celebration on New Years Eve.

The popular music venue which caters for “rock and metal fans” has been at risk of closure for a number of years after plans were initially submitted to build a 13-storey tower block on the site.

Despite 1,100 people signing a petition to save the venue in the space of just 24 hours, the plans were approved.

But in September new plans were lodged for a tower block at the site with 139 studio flats, a gym, study area and laundry room, plus communal space.

In a Facebook post, staff said: "So, the time has come to say farewell... for now.

"Come give a send off to our current home of 17 years, whilst welcoming in a new year full of possibilities.

"It will be bittersweet, but it will be a night to remember. Featuring the long-awaited return of the mighty Blackout playing a huge set of rock favourites!

"This one will sell out, so grab yours early to avoid disappointment! Ticket link in the comments below..."

The new plans include cycle parking facilities and could "boost the city centre by increasing footfall and spending", according to planners Danehurst Developments.

Despite the closure of the current site though, staff say that they could continue at a new premises.

In a post on the pub's website a spokesperson said: "Whilst the industry is certainly more challenging now when compared with the pre-pandemic age, we still believe that we can continue to be successful under a new roof.

"As always, we thank you all so much for your continued support!"

The announcement has been met with sadness from pub goers from over the years who have shared their memories of the venue.

Shane O'loughlin commented on the post saying: "Had many a great night at this place will be massively missed but the memories will stay!

"Remember watching a Slipnot tribute band here was an awesome night!"

Another, James Mulliner said: "I remember drinking here since roughly about 2004 time, so many great memories and times and all the bar staff come and gone I'm proudly still glad to have as friends.

"Thank you for the best times and best of luck for the future".
