Fly-tipping dumped and left outside a Shirley pub for two years has finally been removed.

The removal of the rubbish outside the Shield and Dagger comes after George Percival called for it to be sorted.

The issue had been cause for concern for many residents, with the pile of disused furniture deemed a fire hazard.

Southampton City Council had said the land was privately owned – making the removal of the fly-tipping the responsibility of the landlord - who said it had been cleared but more was dumped.

Daily Echo:

With the council and the pub’s landlord locked in a standoff, Mr Percival said he decided to intervene.

When the Shield and Dagger Pub was listed for sale by auction, Mr Percival monitored the proceedings closely and, upon its completion, promptly penned a letter to the new owner outlining the persistent concerns voiced by locals.

Daily Echo:

On Thursday, November 30, action was taken by the new owner, leading to the complete removal of accumulated rubbish and the securing of the site to prevent future incidents of fly-tipping.

In response to the removal of the rubbish, Mr Percival shared his thoughts.

He told the Echo: "I share the frustration of residents over the two-year inaction by the council on the fly-tipping issue.

“In the face of the council's current financial pressures, it is evident that common sense, proactive leadership is essential.

Daily Echo:

“Councillors should be on doorsteps, actively listening to concerns, and finding practical solutions.”

The Lib Dem candidate added: “The Southampton Liberal Democrats commend the new owner for taking swift action to rectify this persistent issue and remain committed to advocating for the welfare and concerns of the Southampton community.”

Speaking to the Echo in September, Christine Walsh – who lives to the back of the Shield and Dagger said: “If there is a fire because of all of this rubbing then the back of our house could catch fire.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen.”
