An 84-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a van.

He was injured by a black Mercedes Sprinter van on Ruby Road just after 10.15am on Saturday. 

The pedestrian was rushed to Southampton General Hospital where he remains. 

He is being treated for serious injuries including broken bones. 

Police say his condition is stable.

A 66-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving and driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit. 

He has been released without charge but remains under investigation. 

The road was cordoned off by police for several hours following the crash.
