Plans to transform part of Southampton city centre by building almost 140 new student flats have been given the go-ahead.

The scheme will see a brownfield site at the junction of Vincents Walk and Pound Tree Road in Southampton turned into a 13-storey block for students at the city's two universities.

The “highest quality” development includes a gym, study area and laundry rooms, as well as communal space and extensive cycle parking facilities.

However, plans have sparked some pushback from fans of the alternative music venue The Firehouse Pub on Vincents Walk, which announced it would be closing after the plans were submitted.

It was set to host a farewell celebration on New Year's Eve.

Southampton City Council approved the plans on December 21.

Danehurst Developments, the London-based firm which will carry out the plans, described the proposed building as a “landmark” overlooking Houndwell Park.

The planning statement which accompanied the application said the 139 student flats will ease the shortage of student accommodation in the city, thus reducing the pressure on the private rental sector.

It added that the rise in student population will also boost the city centre by increasing footfall and spending.

The planning statement praised the design of the tower, saying it would allow residents to enjoy “exceptional” living standards, including large amounts of amenity space.

It added: "The proposals will create a safer local environment as a result of on-site management and increased natural surveillance.

"The creation of jobs during construction and operation of the building will provide employment opportunities for numerous individuals."

It went on to say: "The development proposes the highest quality of tall building, bringing planning, urban design, public safety, and economic benefits to this sustainable but currently underutilised site."

Supporters of The Firehouse Pub previously objected to the proposals.

One said: “The Firehouse is a cornerstone of the alternative music scene in Southampton, attracting people from outside the city.

“Losing the bar/venue will have a negative cultural impact for the sake of additional student accommodation that could be built elsewhere.”

David Burke, who lived in the city for seven years until 2020, said: “Losing this venue would be a substantial blow to Southampton's musical culture.

"I urge you to consider amending the plans such that the venue can continue operations.”
