Neighbours at a Southampton block of flats are speechless after the tragic death of a newborn baby boy led to two arrests.
At around 8.20am on Saturday, the air ambulance was called to the emergency at Millbrook Towers, landing in Mansel Park - with the police joining them 10 minutes later.
Two doctors and specialist paramedics from the air ambulance assisted the ambulance service with treatment.
The baby boy, who was born on Christmas Eve, was rushed to hospital by road.
But despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead.
A 33-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, both from Southampton, have been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child and neglect.
In the wake of the tragedy, officers were seen patrolling the block and knocking on neighbours' doors asking for information.
The tragic death has sent shockwaves through the tower block community, with one neighbour saying the news made them feel “sick”.
Lauren Burnham, 29, a nursery practitioner, said: “I had heard that it involved a baby, but we had no idea that this is what it was.
“We had some people come knock on our doors, but we didn’t expect anything so severe.
"Such a young soul and so vulnerable, it's heart-breaking.
“It makes me feel a bit sick.”
Her partner, Luke Childs, 30, a worker at B&Q, said: “I am speechless, and I don’t really know what to say.
“That this is something that happened in this block and to think it happened so close to us is quite unbelievable.”
The dad-of-two added: “I have kids of my own and I couldn’t bear thinking about how I would be feeling.
“I still check on my kids before going to bed to make sure they are okay.”
A 32-year-old mum who has lived in the flats for 10 years said: “It is awful.
“I have lost a little one for myself and I know the pain of losing a child. It makes me shiver to hear this happened.”
The pair who have been arrested have been bailed until April 6 while the investigation continues.
