A concern for welfare prompted a police response on the Itchen Bridge this afternoon.
Officers were seen on the Southampton bridge around 4pm on January 10.
There were delays on approach on the inbound side as vehicles moved past the incident.
A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called just before 4pm to a report of a concern for welfare of a woman on the Itchen Bridge.
"She is now in the care of officers."
A police van was parked on the inbound lane just over the crest of the bridge with its flashing lights on.
Another vehicle was seen parked ahead of the van.
Traffic was controlled by the emergency services.
Delays on both the inbound and outbound lanes eased after the incident was cleared, shortly before 5pm.
