Eight new homes could be built in Southampton to tackle the shortage of affordable housing in the city.

The proposals from Abri Housing would see a row of two sets of three terraced houses and two semi-detached on land adjacent to Bryanston Road, Itchen.

It would bring a total of eight homes, consisting of four two-bedrooms and four three-bedrooms, all with "spacious" and "attractive" back gardens.

Abri says the development would directly tackle the city’s “clear” and “identified” need for two and three-bedroom properties.

Referring to the housing association’s ambitions for the site, the design and access statement said: “Abri is committed to reducing their impact on the environment alongside providing high-quality affordable housing.

“This includes ensuring that we provide comfortable and affordable homes for our customers.”

It adds: “This site presents an opportunity to deliver environmentally and socially sustainable residential development with wider benefits to the locality. 

“Abri’s aspirations for the site directly align with key elements of the local plan, most notably contributing to both a low carbon economy and high-quality built environment.”

A total of 20 parking bays would be provided, two per house and four extra spaces.

The scheme is funded by the housing association’s £250m strategic partnership with Homes England.

Last year, Abri was appointed as one of four registered providers on the Southampton City Council Affordable Housing Framework.

It comes as the city council aims to bring 8,000 new affordable homes by 2040 by developing already selected sites.

Hyde Group, Sovereign Housing Association and Stonewater will also work with the authority to build more affordable housing in council-owned land around Southampton.

The properties developed will be a mix of social rent and affordable rent, as well as shared ownership properties.

The plans await a decision by Southampton City Council.
