A fish and chip shop that has served the residents of Hedge End for more than 35 years has been honoured with a Good Food Award for its commitment to serving quality food.
Experienced owner Shane Lee, 59, was just 14 when he first started working at his then local chippy in London.
After becoming the manager and looking for opportunities to progress within the industry, Shane decided to move to Hampshire and take on a chip shop of his own.
At just 23, Shane moved to Hedge End with his wife and two children to open JHenry’s Fish & Chips – naming the shop after his eldest son John-Henry Lee.
He said: “In 1988, I had an opportunity to move down to Hedge End and run a chip shop on my own with the experience I had picked up being in the business for nine years.
“Today we are so well known in the local area we have had loyal customers of over 20 years – we are even on Christmas card terms with many of them.”
The renowned fish and chip shop has been awarded a Good Food Award for 2023/24.
JHenry’s has been recognised for its good quality food, friendly service, and locally sourced produce.
It has also been awarded an Elite Hygiene Award – the highest hygiene rating that can be awarded – for meeting hygiene standards at three separate inspections over eight years.
Manager of JHenry’s and Shane's son, Sonny Lee, 29, added: “I love how well we know our customers - it's great to see them regularly even just to have a catch-up.
“All our food is locally sourced, cooked to order – we maintain quality food, cooked in a clean environment, and served with a smile.
“It's great to be recognised for all our hard work over the years – it really makes it all worthwhile.
"We want to say a huge thank you to our hard-working members of staff and of course to our amazing customers.”
The team said that they were particularly proud of their achievement after facing high utility costs throughout the last year.
