Southampton City Council has appointed an interim CEO after the authority's financial woes led Mike Harris to resign.

Andrew Travers, former chief executive of Barnet Council and the London Borough of Lambeth, will take over the role on Monday, January 29.

It comes after Mr Harris announced his intention to resign after the authority's financial problems took "a significant toll" on his health

Mr Travers said: “Having previously led two councils through periods of significant transformation, I was drawn to the challenge in Southampton.

"This is an incredibly difficult time for local authorities across the country and it is no different here.

"However, the conversations I’ve had with officers and politicians have convinced me that we have the vision and skills we need to deliver a truly effective transformation over the coming months.

"I’m looking forward to getting started on the 29 January."

At one stage Southampton City Council was forecasting a budget shortfall of £55m for the 2024-25 financial year.

This has now been reduced to £38.4m, but the council still needs to find extra savings before the budget meeting scheduled for February 21.

Plans to delay the budget until March following Mr Harris' resignation have been criticised by Conservative group leader, Cllr Dan Fitzhenry, who has since announced he won't be seeking re-election in May.

Mr Travers has experience in both the public and private sector, the council says.

He was given the role following a chief officer employment panel meeting on January 19.

Leader of the council and chair of the employment panel, Cllr Lorna Fielker, said: “I’m delighted that we have found such an experienced Chief Executive with a track record of delivering fast and effective council transformation.

"We have moved quickly to secure Andrew and I’m looking forward to working with him to deliver a strong and sustainable council for the people and businesses of Southampton."
