Armed police were called out to an incident near a city centre cemetery.
An eyewitness saw officers with firearms at Cemetery Road, near Southampton Old Cemetery, at 9.40pm on Sunday night.
Police have since confirmed that they were called there following a report that three cars had pulled up to three men.
Several men then got out of the vehicles and were 'acting in an intimidating and threatening manner', with one of the men allegedly holding a knife.

The armed officers were sent out 'to ensure the safety of those involved and members of the public', a police spokesperson said.
The three cars were searched - but no weapons were found.
Nobody was injured during the incident and enquiries are ongoing, police said.
This comes as an Audi was smashed up in the same road on Friday night.
Police are currently investigating this and seeing if the two incidents are linked.
