Residents of Shirley are in uproar over an alleyway that is used as a “dumping ground” for rubbish and fly tippers.
The alleyway, on Church Street, is located behind a number of businesses including CEX and Costa Coffee on Shirley High Street.
One infuriated Shirley resident, Tony Weafer, said: “The rubbish started to build two weeks ago and as it piles up – others see it as a magnet for dumping rubbish.
“The bins behind CEX have also been targeted by people looking to steal disused electronics that the company had put in the bin to throw away.
“I have seen people rummage through the bins and throwing the rubbish onto the floor.
“The council will not clear rubbish that is on private property – and the businesses don’t want to pick up rubbish that is not theirs or they have already put in the bin.
“No one wants to take responsibility.”
A representative of Environmental Health at Southampton City Council has agree to meet residents at the alleyway on Monday morning to discuss this issue.
