He's the top chef behind a delightful café with stunning views set to open on the banks of the River Hamble this summer.
Currently operating out of a pop up eatery until the rebuild of The Boat House Café at Swanwick Marina is complete, Head Chef Ben Newcombe talks fresh fish and Monica from Friends!
What first inspired you to become a chef?
I like to make people happy, and I can do that through food, a bit like Monica from Friends!
What was the first meal you cooked for someone else?
I cooked a fish platter for my grandparents.
Tell us a bit about your career so far…?
I started in kitchens at 14, loved the industry and have moved between kitchen and front of house working my way to Head Chef and General Manager of a pub. Having worked for pub and restaurant chains, I have found my passion for fresh food and have loved my time with Ideal Collection. I am looking forward to the new Boat House Café opening in the summer.
What is your proudest career moment to date?
Helping people start their chef journey and getting them to love the industry. When I joined the Boat House there was a chef who was really behind on his NVQ and I got him caught up and finished despite only having three months left.

Seafood or Hake Chowder

Solo dining
The Pop-up Café is open every day from 8am – 4pm while The Boat House Café undergoes redevelopment. it is due to be unveiled in early summer.
