A Saints football match has been postponed following a huge fire opposite the stadium.

The fire, first reported at 1.05pm, has ravaged a warehouse opposite St Mary’s Football Stadium.

With the emergency response still underway, and road closures expanding around the building, this has meant the planned Southampton FC match postponed.

Saints were due to play tonight in their Championship match against Preston North End F.C.

The game was due to kick of at 7.45pm.

Preston fans will be travelling down to Southampton and fans have begun speculating on whether tonight’s game will go ahead.

Alfie House, our sports reporter, tweeted his outlook on the situation at around 3.15pm.

He said: "Fire is still raging on in an industrial building outside St Mary's - staff would typically be turning up soon.

"Getting to point where a decision will have to be made - not going to be in club hands and will be safety-based from Fire and Police services. Looks bleak."

Updates on tonight’s game are to follow.

Saints supporters have now begun offering their reactions on the idea that tonight's game will be cancelled due to the fire.

One Saints supporter wrote on Twitter: "It’s going to be hard to provide an update when it’s barely been 2 hours since the fire started.

"Although away fans are travelling down they probably need more time to see if the fire will be able to be controlled before KO."

Another Southampton fan said: "If anyone thinks footballers will be running around breathing in the rancid air that will still be around tonight even if they put the fire out, they really need to think on.

"I can smell it from the Aldi on Bursledon Road."

Other fans have said that this is a safety matter that should be left up to the fire service and police.

A fan Tweeted: "Why are fans going mad about no statement from the club about the game tonight?

"It’s not up to the it’s up to the fire brigade and the police."

At around 4pm, the club announced the match would be postponed. You can read more about this here.
