SAINTS have confirmed their Championship fixture versus Preston North End has been postponed just hours ahead of kick-off.
Russell Martin's side were due to take on the Lancashire visitors at St Mary's Stadium on Wednesday evening with kick-off from 7:45pm.
However, a fire that had been raging in the St Mary's industrial estate since the early afternoon has seen the game postponed.
Southampton's statement reads: "Southampton Football Club regrets to announce that tonight’s Sky Bet Championship match against Preston North End has been postponed.

"The decision was made after consultation with the local authorities and emergency services after a major fire broke out in a building next to the St Mary’s Stadium site earlier today.
Same sentiments as others but feel for Preston fans who have spent time and money already to follow their club today.

Wish them a good night in Southampton anyway or safe travels home and I’m sure they will be welcomed again soon.
No other decision could be made.#SaintsFC
"The incident has caused significant disruption in the area with road closures around the stadium still in place as fire crews continue to deal with the situation.
"We are grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL, and while we appreciate the disappointment fans may feel, we hope they will understand the need to put the safety of supporters and staff of both clubs first.
