A burst water pipe near the scene of a large fire has created further chaos – but there is no timescale for its resolution.

Southern Water engineers are tackling the burst in Peel Street, a stone’s throw away from the scene of yesterday's warehouse fire in Marine Parade.

The issue will take ‘some more time to fix’ due to the road closures in place.

In a further connection to yesterday's blaze, the burst pipe is located near another premises of Polystar Plastics – the same company whose warehouse near St Mary's Stadium was ripped apart by flames on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the owner of Yau Brothers Asian supermarket, which is by the flooding, 'the road is making bubbling and cracking noises and slowly rising'.

They said: "The pipe burst around 10pm last night, and has since flooded Peel street, on which Yau Brothers and Polystar are located.

"Southern Water have not yet turned off the water, however have attended the site and said that the road feels unstable.

"The road is hazardous at the best of times due to all the potholes (which have been reported to the council already), but now is also flooded."

A spokesperson from the water company said: “Our teams are tackling a burst water main at Peel Street in Southampton.

"However work on this is taking longer than expected due to the large fire close to St Mary’s Stadium.

“We are aiming to finish this work as quickly as possible, we’re sorry for any disruption this is causing.”

In an online update, Southern Water said: “We're sorry the burst in SO14 5QT will take some more time to fix due to a recent fire in area and road closures limiting our access.

“Again, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.”

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service has confirmed they are not involved in this incident.

However, they remain at the scene of the blaze alongside police officers.
