A MAN has been arrested after an emergency worker was assaulted in Southampton.

The suspect then failed to appear in court and was further arrested for drug offences, police said.

It's one of several arrests made by the Southampton City Centre (CCU) policing unit, who in a Facebook post updated followers on some of the latest work the dedicated team has been doing in the city.

The CCU listed nine arrests that had been made – including a woman wanted on warrant, three people arrested on shoplifting offences, and a man was detained for failing to appear in court.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the CCU said: “The CCU are leading the way with how Hampshire and Isle of Wight police tackle anti-social behaviour and shoplifting.

“We continue our zero tolerance in the city centre. We are maximising opportunities to charge and remand criminals and plan on taking this to the next level in the coming weeks.”

The CCU listed further arrests made on the Southampton Police Facebook page – with two men arrested following outstanding warrants, while another man was apprehended following a theft of a motor vehicle.
