Buildings have been evacuated after an unexploded device has been found in Southampton city centre.

Police were called at 10.20am to report a small piece of "suspected exploded ordnance" being found during excavations in the area of Cumberland Place in Southampton.

Officers responded to the scene and nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution, police have confirmed.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team will be attending.

A 100 metre cordon is in place.

Residents have told the Echo that the area had been evacuated due to an 'explosive device' being found.

Ryan, who lives in Parkview Apartments, said he had a knock on the door from the police earlier today who told him they were evacuating the area due to an "explosive device".

A large section of Watts Park has been cordoned off by police.
