Fareham Borough Council has announced improvement to Solent Airport that will allow it to open longer hours and stop flights being cancelled in bad weather.

Work to install aeronautical ground lighting at Solent Airport will enable aircraft to land at the airport as planned, even in poor weather – will be in place by this summer.

It will allow the airport to remain open from 9am to 6pm throughout the year, rather than having to close much earlier in the winter months due to poor light.

The council said that customers can now be assured that during the winter months aircraft will be able to land and take off regardless of changes in the weather.

Fareham Council added that the development will strengthen the airport’s role in Fareham’s economy and will continue to attract skilled new jobs into the Borough.

Work is already underway to install the new lighting, which is being carried out by Dyer and Butler and should be complete in the summer ready for autumn.

The lights will only be illuminated when aircraft require them to land and will not affect the restrictions currently in place that limit the number of flights after dark.

Councillor Seán Woodward, Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, said: “This investment underlines Fareham Borough Council's commitment to fostering innovation and progress at Solent Airport.
