Monarch's Way named among 15 greatest walks in Britain

Monarch's Way, which goes through the county onto its finishing point in Sussex, was included on the list.

The list was created to try and pick the best walks in Britain that were also gargantuan in length.

The publication wrote: "But that is what we have tried to do here, choosing something for everyone, whether your idea of a great walk takes two weeks or a long weekend; whether you want fantastic scenery or bags of cultural interest; a good quality path, fewer people to contend with, or simply a route that is well marked and easy to follow."

What did The Telegraph say about Monarch's Way?

Starting at Worcester and finishing at Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, via Mottisfont and Hambledon in Hampshire, Monarch's Way is an incredibly long walk that spans a mind-blowing 625 miles.

You'll definitely need to be mentally prepared to take it on, as the length of time to complete it ranges from 30-60 days.

The Telegraph writes: "In an attempt to follow King Charles II’s frantic flight after his Civil War defeat in 1651, the Monarch’s Way staggers drunkenly across the Midlands, the Cotswolds, the south-west and into Sussex, even doubling back on itself.

"This means it contains a huge variety – not least two World Heritage Sites, a National Park and six National Landscapes – though also some less-interesting linking terrain, in an effort to stick to Charles’s trail.

"Its continued existence relies on volunteer Trail Minders, who each monitor their patch – a huge undertaking."

The publication adds: "It was the LDWA website’s most-visited path-page in 2021, though maybe because people were Googling the then-monarch’s upcoming Jubilee.

Another walk that goes through Hampshire and was included on the list was the South Downs Way, which is relatively easier at only 7-10 days to complete.

Starting at Winchester it finishes up in Eastbourne and is around 100 miles in length.
