A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in Southampton after a search uncovered a knife, drugs and mobile phones.

Police were carrying out patrols in the Holyrood Estate yesterday when they came across two males "loitering and acting suspiciously".

When officers approached, they said they could smell cannabis and enquiries were made through the Police National Computer to identify the pair.

A search order was issued, giving officers the power to detain the two males for a search.

One of the two then attempted to obstruct the search and escape, though he was quickly caught again.

Within his bag, officers found a large knife and suspected Class A and B drugs.

They also found mobile phones in his possession.

Now a 17-year-old boy from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs.

He remains in custody at this time whilst enquiries continue.

A police spokesperson said: "Drug and knife crime is one of our top priorities in the city centre.

"Our patrols are driven and planned by the intelligence we are given.
