A mum suffering from terminal breast cancer has said does not want to ‘leave my daughter behind’ as she fights until the very last moment.
Kasia Augustyn, 34, was given the heart-wrenching diagnosis last year, having been initially told the lump on her breast was a milk cyst for months.
Mum to 15-month-old daughter Gaja, she has said she will not let the disease bring her down saying: “I don’t want to leave my daughter”.
The 34-year-old, who has lived in Southampton for 15 years and is engaged to her partner, Krystian Olenchny, has appealed for people’s generosity after a family friend set up a fundraiser to help her access alternative medicine.
In an emotional interview with the Echo, Kasia said: “I grew up without my father I can’t imagine for my daughter to grow up without her mother.
“I don’t know what to say, if people can support me and give me the chance to save my life then, please, even if it’s just a little.
“I have a daughter and I don’t want to go and leave my daughter.”
Kasia’s biggest joy was when she gave birth to her daughter, Gaja, but in the first months following this, she noticed a lump on her breast.
The mum, who lives in Shirley but is originally from Poland, informed her GP who prescribed her antibiotics but in a matter of weeks the pain from the lump became unbearable and she was referred to Princess Anne Hospital.
In April last year, she underwent an ultrasound and biopsies but these never detected any form of cancer and the lump was drained of any liquid.
At one point, the pain was so unbearable that the 34-year-old had to call an ambulance and was rushed to hospital, but she was prescribed antibiotics.
In July, in a last-ditch attempt to find what was wrong, she visited a private clinic in Poland where a vacuum biopsy was carried out where the worst news was given – she had triple-negative breast cancer, a stage four cancer.
Kasia said: “I had a hope that it wouldn’t be cancer. It was a big shock.”
When she informed the oncologists at Princess Anne, she was seen a week later, despite initially being given an appointment two weeks after that date.
She underwent six months of treatment which included immunotherapy and radiotherapy.
She has also sought other forms of alternative treatment in Germany and Hungary. A fundraiser was also launched to help the mum with the costs of these.
However last week she was told it was an advanced breast cancer and that there is not a cure.
“I was told by the doctor she didn’t know if I could live another year or another month. I asked her 'what do I do?' She said I could have another dose of Chemotherapy, but it wouldn’t be very effective.”
However, despite the dignosis, Kasia and Krystian have decided they will get married later this month.
The gofundme has so far raised over £14,000 out of the £20,000 goal.
