Saints have made a touching gesture to a fan who died suddenly as a fundraiser has been launched in his memory.

Joseph Godden, 28, of Westerling, died on Winchester Hill, Romsey, on Thursday, April 11, near The Sun Inn, after being found with serious 'trunk' injuries.

It was initially being treated as a hit-and-run by police - but this has since been ruled out after a post-mortem.

The death of Joseph, known as Joe, was met with an outpouring of emotion from his mother, colleagues and fellow Saints fans.

On April 16, there was a round of applause in the 28th minute at St Mary's Stadium - reflecting his age - during the Saints match against Preston in tribute to Mr Godden.

Now, the club has sent a personalised first team shirt for the 2023/2024 season saying 'Godden' with the number 28 to his family.

Writing on X, Simon Richards said their 'thoughtfulness and kindness means the world' to his family.

The letter from the club, which came with the shirt, said: "We are so sorry to hear the tragic news about Joe, one of our most dedicated supporters, especially under such heart-breaking circumstances.

"Our deepest condolences go out to all his loving friends and family.

"Joe's unwavering support for the club will be thoroughly missed, but please take some comfort from the fact that all of us at Southampton Football Club are thinking of you and sending our very best wishes."

This comes as a fundraiser has been launched for an event in Joe's memory.

At 8.30pm on Friday, April 26, ‘Joezone’ will see gamers take part in an online event playing Call of Duty: Warzone.

Money raised from the fundraiser in Joe’s name will be donated to his family to go towards the cost of the funeral.

Organisers have raised £155 so far against a £250 target at the time of writing.

The fundraiser post said: “Welcome to the ‘Joezone.’

“We all know Joe loved playing Warzone with the boys, so why not have an event in his name.

“All money from donations will be going to his family to help with the funeral costs.

“So dig deep and help us out!”
