Southampton City Council has confirmed that road works in Spring Road have now finished – but residents in Sholing are not free from disruption just yet.

In February the council announced that Spring Road would be subject to road works to make the area safer after a number of high-profile crashes at the junction of Station Road and Spring Road.

Spring Road resident, Amy Watson, 21, previously told the Echo that she had three cars wrecked outside her home due to careless and speeding drivers.

The 21-year-old said it was not uncommon for cars to tear down the residential road at breakneck speed – and hundreds joined her calls for something to be done.

Around 600 people signed a petition urging the council to implement safety measures on Spring Road.

The area is now set for further road works to install a crossing on Portsmouth Road – near to the junction of Spring Road.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Local people have been using the re-opened junction at Spring Road and Station Road for around a week since this section of the Eastern Quietway works was completed.

“The last phase, resurfacing and relining near to the entrance of Miller’s Pond, was completed on Friday and marks the conclusion of the Transforming Cities Fund Eastern Quietway project.

“However, access to properties in this area will continue to be via Station Road and Spring Road due to the installation of a new zebra crossing on Portsmouth Road nearby to the junction of Spring Road, funded by the Safer Roads Fund.”

The authority said in order to manage traffic flow, the junction of Portsmouth Road and Spring Road will remain closed together with temporary traffic signals on Portsmouth Road

“The location of the new crossing on Portsmouth Road has been identified by the Safer Roads Foundation on behalf of the Department for Transport and will help local people to access Miller’s Pond, Mayfield Park and the Shoreburs Greenway.”
