A Southampton man has scooped national recognition at the Oddfellows' Making a Difference Awards.

Singled out in the ‘Enriching Lives Socially’ category, Terry Rendle, aged 84, was handed the accolade by Society Chairman, Barbara Needham, on May 28.

The gong acknowledges an Oddfellows member's contribution to organising and running social activities.

During 12 years with the Society, Terry devised events, catered, ticketed, hosted and cleared up, ensuring members remained active and connected.

On winning the award, Terry, a retired mechanic and petrol tanker driver, said: "I was very surprised. I was flabbergasted. I had to read the letter three times before I realised what I was reading.

"The Oddfellows has given me more purpose in life. It’s a wonderful organisation and if you get involved it’s very rewarding.

"Socialising is so important as you get older. It keeps your brain busy and your body busy which means you might last a bit longer."
