A man has appeared in court after he threatened to 'destroy' a Southampton MP. 

Liam McCarthy was remanded in custody on Thursday having previously pleaded guilty to sending threatening emails to Caroline Nokes. 

Southampton Magistrates' Court previously heard how he has threatened to 'destroy' Alan Whitehead MP in an email to Ms Nokes. 

The court also heard he said he would kill members of the Department for Work and Pensions and told the Romsey and Southampton North MP that she was "on his list".

Ms Nokes recently spoke of her concern for fellow election candidates due to abuse targeted at her in the past.

McCarthy is next due to appear at the same court on June 5 for sentencing. 

The 33-year-old of Copperfield Road, Southampton previously admitted to “continuously” sending emails and leaving voicemails for the Conservative MP between May 15, 2022 and March 4, 2023.

He also admitted leaving threatening voicemails for Steve Smith, former head of stronger communities, neighbourhoods and housing, at Southampton City Council between November 14 and 21, 2022.
