The Solent Sky Museum is hosting its historic tram celebration on June 8-9, 2024, showcasing three Southampton-built trams.
Visitors will get an exclusive insight into these trams' rehabilitation at a specially designed workshop at the Solent Sky Museum in Albert Road South.
The 'open day' event will feature various special exhibitions, including working model tramways, market stalls, historic vehicles, and a host of fun children's activities complete with quizzes and colouring-in sheets.
Moreover, the museum will also exhibit 20 airplanes from the golden era of aviation, including the critically acclaimed Spitfire, avant-garde jet fighters, and the highly luxurious Empire Flying Boat 'Beachcomber.' undSo this is not only for tram enthusiasts but aviation lovers as well.
The Southampton Tram Project, initiated in 1977, intended to restore several Southampton trams. Currently, the group of volunteers is working on over 100-year-old Car 11, originally crafted in Portswood in 1923.
Other iconic trams in the collection include Car 38, crafted in 1903, and Lisbon 715.
Both these cars are narrative of an era gone by, boasting intricate knifeboard upper deck seating, capable of comfortably navigating through the medieval Bargate arch.
The museum extends an invitation to all to be part of this heritage celebration, which will be open from 10am to 5pm on June 8-9, 2024, and offers the opportunity to plunge into locomotive and aviation history at Solent Sky Museum, Albert Road South, Southampton.
