Plans to carry out urgent repairs to one of Southampton's most historic buildings have been unveiled.

Equans has applied for permission to replace rotting windows at a London Road site that was occupied by Ordnance Survey for almost 130 years.

Known as The Barrack Block, the Grade II-listed building is next door to the city's crown court.

A design and access statement that accompanies the application says the previous lack of maintenance has resulted in "damage and deterioration" to the windows.

"Large sections of the frames, transoms and upstands of nearly all the windows have all suffered from severe water ingress over time.

"Many of these timber elements are rotten through and/or would require substantial level of replacement/intervention to make them structurally sound.

"It is unclear when the windows were installed, although it is most likely they were replaced when the building was reduced in height following bomb damage during the 1940s.

"The proposed windows will match the existing in terms of preserving the characteristics. The existing glass and ironmongery will be replaced like for like."
