Two people have been arrested after three members of door staff were assaulted by a man and a woman outside O’Neills on Above Bar Street on Sunday, June 16.

The incident occurred as England fans packed out pubs and bars in Southampton city centre to watch the Three Lions take on Serbia in the first group game of Euro 2024.

It comes after staff at Turtle Bay restaurant were also verbally abused, according to Hampshire Police.

The glasses of one of the bouncers was broken during the assault, the force said.

A 22-year-old woman from Southampton arrested on suspicion of two counts of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, criminal damage and failure to comply with a Section 35 direction excluding a person from an area.

A 51-year-old man also from the city was also arrested on suspicion of common assault.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Hampshire Police told the Echo: “We were called at 9.50pm on Sunday (June 16) to a report that three members of door staff had been assaulted by a man and woman outside of O’Neill’s.

“No serious injuries were reported, however the glasses of one of the victims were broken during the assault.

“Officers attended and arrested a 22-year-old woman from Southampton on suspicion of two counts of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, criminal damage and failure to comply with a Section 35 direction excluding a person from an area, and a 51-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of common assault.”

They added: “They remain in police custody at the current time.”

The police spokesperson went on to say: “The woman had been earlier issued with a Section 35 notice ordering her to leave the city centre after an incident in which staff at Turtle Bay were verbally abused.”
