A Southampton shoplifter who stole chocolate, meat and energy drinks has been ordered to pay more than £1,000 in compensation.

Andrew Thomson pleaded guilty to 14 counts of theft from a shop after incidents between December 31, 2023 and May 8 this year.

Southampton Magistrates' Court heard how he stole items worth £1,108.05 in total.

These included chilled food, chocolate, meat, cheese, fish and energy drinks.

The items were stolen from Sainsbury's in Southampton as well as multiple Co-Op stores including Archers Road, Commercial Road and Parkville Road.

The 45-year-old was also convicted of being arrested for breaking his bail conditions after he entered a Co-Op store which he was banned from visiting.

Thomson, of no fixed abode, was jailed for 18 weeks and ordered to pay £1,079.70 worth of compensation.

Magistrates concluded that the offences are "so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified".

They also found that Thomson had an unwillingness to comply and was persistently re-offending.
