The size of Southampton carnival in 1984 was notably smaller than usual, not due to weather conditions or low attendance, but rather because of an administrative mishap.

In that particular year, the city centre celebration hit a snag despite the carnival meeting its typical high standards – there was a shortage of floats.

As a result of an error during the application process, a significant number of entry forms failed to be dispatched.

One of the standout attractions at the event was a magnificent swan float designed by a collaborative team from Southampton Hospitals and the University.
