Commuters in Southampton are facing cancellations to some trains this morning due to a signalling problem.

South Western Railway is warning rail passengers that delays are likely to last throughout the day due to a signalling problem.

Due to a 'track circuit failure' there will be some cancellations to trains running from Weymouth to Southampton.

Trains are running at a reduced speed and may be cancelled or delayed by up to 10 minutes.

The 7.55am train to Southampton Central was cancelled due to the problem early this morning causing panic on the station platform.

A spokesperson for South Western Railway said: "A track circuit failure is affecting the railway between Brockenhurst and Beaulieu Road.

"We estimate that disruption to our services will end at the end of the day. Trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised because of this problem.

"Due to a track circuit failure between Brockenhurst and Beaulieu Road trains have to run at reduced speed on the line towards Southampton.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 10 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day."

"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."

South Western Railway has told customers that tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on the following bus services:

CrossCountry services between Southampton and Bournemouth in both directions.

  • Bluestar 8, 9, 11 and 12 between Southampton - Millbrook - Redbridge Totton.
  • Bluestar 6 between Southampton - Totton - Ashurst - Brockenhurst Lymington.
  • Morebus X1 and X2 between Lymington - New Milton - Christchurch Bournemouth.
  • Morebus 120 between New Milton - Sway Lymington.
  • Morebus 119 between New Milton and Lymington.
