A single dad is taking clearing a ‘jungle’ of a communal area into his own hands.

Builder Tyler Meadows, 27, said he could no longer face the overgrown green space outside his housing association home in Upper Deacon Road.

He is making the space usable - and carrying out the transformation out of his own pocket.

Tyler moved into the property in 2021 and said Vivid Housing promised improvements to the site.

But when nothing happened, he dug out his tools and got to work on the eyesore.

He is keen to make the area enjoyable for fellow residents, and especially for his son.

He said: Once I moved in, I realised the outside space was abandoned and that no one has been taking care of it.

“I only saw people come along with leaf blowers and covering the leftover rubble from the construction of the building under bushes.

“I was recently signed off work and there is only so much PlayStation you can play, so I wanted to recover on my feet.

“The whole area was overgrown with brambles, weeds, roots, and countless other things.”

Tyler started about 20 days ago and did not anticipate making some interesting discoveries.

“Since clearing it I have found a Rambo knife, a sex toy, needles, syringes, a bong, and pipes,” he said.

Tyler wants to create a safe and pleasant communal area for all to enjoy.

He said: “I want my son to go out and play outside, and since doing this, all the kids in the block have been coming out to play and know each other’s names.

“The whole place is still massively overgrown.”

He added: “As of June 20, I have only been doing this for 22 days. It is tedious work and there is a lot to do.

“I have now put cigarette butt pots around the building and now there are no butts on the ground.

“So, it is the small things that really make a difference. I also put in a bird bath and there are so many birds here now.

“Nothing was getting done by Vivid.”

Vivid confirmed grass cutting, border maintenance and litter picking is undertaken in communal areas.

Marc Boyes, property services manager, said: “If we are notified of additional work needed, then this will be looked at and booked in as appropriate.

“Our supervisors will continue to monitor the area to ensure it meets our standards.”
