Princess Anne has been taken to hospital after sustaining minor injuries.

It comes just days before she was due to visit Hampshire this week.

The Princess Royal also sustained a concussion in an incident at the Gatcombe Park estate on Sunday evening.

She was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where she remains "as a precautionary measure for observation", Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

A spokesperson said she is expected to make a full and swift recovery and the King has been kept closely informed.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “The Princess Royal has sustained minor injuries and concussion following an incident on the Gatcombe Park estate yesterday evening. Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery.

“The King has been kept closely informed and joins the whole Royal Family in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to the princess for a speedy recovery.”

Princess Anne, 73, is a senior working royal and the younger sister of the King.

She is due to visit two locations in Hampshire on Wednesday.

The Princess Royal is scheduled to open Warsash Sailing Club's renovated clubhouse at Shore House in her role as President of the Royal Yachting Assocation.

She is then due to visit the Community Sailing Programme at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club to mark its 40th anniversary.

Buckingham Palace has not confirmed the status of her visit.
