More details have been revealed about a new special school set to be built in Hedge End.

The 125-place school is to be built in the Boorley Gardens housing development in Boorley Green, specifically for pupils between the ages of 8 and 16 who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Hampshire County Council said that the school is planned to open in September of 2026 - and the authority has now launched a public consultation on the details of the scheme.

Solent Academies Trust were appointed as the academy sponsor for the new school.

The Boorley Green development, which is now underway, includes 680 dwellings, a local centre and open space.

There are a number of large housing developments being built or with planning consent in the vicinity to the new school site.

Hampshire County Council said the new school is proposed to address a shortfall in SEND places within the area.

The building will comprise of:

  • 16 General teaching classrooms
  • 7 specialist and practical teaching classrooms
  • Sensory, therapy and small group rooms
  • 2 learning resource rooms
  • Main hall
  • Dining hall and adjacent kitchen
  • Staff and administration rooms
  • Pupil and staff toilets
  • Play areas for children
  • Parking  for school staff and a drop off facility on the school grounds for safe pick up and drop off.

A letter sent by Mark Saunders, senior strategic development officer of children's services, has alerted residents to a public consultation on the proposal.

This consultation will run from Monday, July 8 to Monday, August 5, 2024.

A website has been set up with the details of the consultation and some extra information on the proposed school.

The council have set up a public meeting to provide an opportunity for parents and stakeholders to discuss the proposals with council officers.

This meeting will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 between 4pm and 6pm at Boorley Green Community Centre.
