The cost of living crisis is taking its toll on large swathes of Southampton.
That is true of renters especially, who are finding their living costs increasing every year.
While this situation is not new, rents are still rising sharply, with Southampton facing a greater annual increase than the rest of the south east.
As of May 2024, the average rent in Southampton stands at £1,135 per month.
So, we've had a look at Zoopla to see what you can find on the rental market of the city, and surrounding areas, for around that price.
Above Bar Street
Priced just above the average at £1,150 per calendar month, this one-bedroom flat is situated in the heart of Southampton City Centre.
It boasts a modern kitchen, as depicted above, though the bathroom and lounge could benefit from updates.
In this instance, the price largely reflects the prime location, being only a 10-minute walk from Southampton Central train station.
The property counts a kebab shop as its nextdoor neighbour.
Hamble
For one-bed renters looking to live in a more rural setting, this annexe in Hamble comes fully furnished, with all bills included, and parking available.
At £1,000 per month it comes in well below the average rent.
Norfolk Road
This charming two bed flat is situated just on the outskirts of the city centre, and is on the market for £1,200 per calendar month.
While the bedrooms and lounge are spacious and airy, the kitchen and bathroom lack the same appeal.
Nevertheless, the property includes access to a communal garden, a significant advantage for renters, particularly during the summer months.
Chandler's Ford
Steering away from flats, this 2-bed terraced house in Chandler’s Ford is within reach for the average renter - at £1,200 per calendar month - due to its distance from Southampton city centre.
It includes a spacious living area and and a shared garden.
This property also holds appeal for young families, as Knightwood Primary School, rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, is just an 8-minute walk away.
High Road
Options for renters seeking more than two bedrooms at this price point are scarce in Southampton.
But this 3-bed flat in Swaythling, on the market for £1,095 per calendar month, provides two spacious bedrooms and one smaller one at the expense of a living room.
It also boasts a pleasant kitchen and bathroom.
While it offers excellent motorway links, parking will be unavailable for around 12 weeks due to ongoing construction in the building block, which may be a drawback for potential tenants.
