A car park blighted by rubbish and waste has been equipped with a fly-tipping deterrent.

A new state-of-the-art solar-powered CCTV camera has been installed in the car park in Woodmill Lane.

The car park, at Riverside Park, is often plagued with piles of rubbish.

But the camera aims to help tackle the tippers and discourage persistent fly-tipping.

The camera gives the team at Southampton City Council access to a real-time feed remotely.

The previous cameras on the site were battery powered and required a weekly visit to download the footage, according to the council.

Now, the local authority is hopeful that the new camera will prevent people from dumping waste.

Cllr John Savage, Cabinet Member for Green City, said: “We are committed to maintaining Riverside Park as a clean and safe environment for everyone to enjoy.

“The installation of this solar-powered camera shows our ongoing commitment to our green city.

“The car park is home to charity donation banks, and we urge the community to be mindful that if these banks are full, that they kindly deliver their donation to a nearby charity accepting donations or take them home until the banks have space available. “

Offenders caught on camera could face a fine or even prosecution.

Southampton City Council has issued more than 100 fixed penalty notices (FPNs) for fly-tipping and littering since June 2022.

A recent case resulted in a resident receiving a £800 FPN fine.

The camera was funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
